How to price your tarot readings
Most readers underprice themselves before they ever charge a single person anything. They decide what they’re worth before they’ve tested the assumption, and they decide low.
This isn’t a confidence problem, exactly. It’s a clarity problem. They’re not sure what they’re actually offering, which makes putting a number on it feel like a guess.
Here’s what I’ve learned from building a professional tarot practice and teaching others to do the same: the price comes after the clarity, not before it.
What You’re Actually Selling
You’re not selling a card reading.
You’re selling a dedicated time of focused, undivided attention on a specific area of someone’s life, filtered through years of practice, filtered through a symbolic system that has helped people navigate their inner world for centuries, and delivered with the care and skill of someone who has done this enough times to know what they’re doing.
That’s not the same as a card reading. The card reading is the format. What you’re selling is the depth, the attention, and the expertise.
When you’re clear on that, pricing changes.
Why Most Readers Underprice
Two reasons.
The first is imposter syndrome. Most new professional readers have a voice in their head that says some version of “who am I to charge for this?” That voice usually gets loudest right before you determine your value.
The second is comparison. They look at what other readers charge and anchor their pricing there, which sounds logical but isn’t. What another reader charges tells you almost nothing about what you should charge. It tells you what they decided they were worth, in their market, with their level of experience and confidence, at the time they set their prices.
Your pricing reflects your clarity about your own time and value. It doesn’t need to match anyone else’s.
A Practical Framework
Start here: what do you need to earn per minute for this to be sustainable?
Not what you’d be happy with. Not the maximum possible. The number below which this stops being worth your time and energy, accounting for the preparation, the reading itself, and the genuine emotional labor of sitting with someone’s real life.
For most professional readers in the US, that number lands somewhere between $2 and $10 per minute, depending on experience, niche, and market. New readers often start between $2 and $3 per minute. Experienced readers with a clear specialty often charge $5 and more (upwards of $25!).
Those are ranges, not rules. The number that’s right for you is the one you can say out loud and feel good about.
The Underpricing Trap
Here’s something I’ve watched happen with new readers: when they set a low price (or free!) to feel safer or to get experience, the clients they attract often don’t respect the space. They’ll ask questions about other people, want to know if someone they’ve gone no-contact with still thinks about them, become insistent or even combative about your responses.
This kind of energy is ultimately draining for the reader, and you’ll burn out before you’ve even given yourself a real chance. Pricing too low doesn’t protect you: it does the opposite.
A price that reflects genuine value attracts clients who value what you’re offering. That’s not just better for your income. It’s better for the work itself.
One More Thing
Imposter syndrome doesn’t go away before you raise your prices. It goes away after. The readers I’ve watched build sustainable practices didn’t wait until they felt confident enough to charge what they were worth. They charged what they were worth and discovered they were confident enough.
